Magnesium, potassium, sodium, and calcium. They run the electrical side of you. Calcium and sodium help a muscle contract, potassium and magnesium help it let go. Running low on any of them shows up as cramps, twitches, restless legs, and tension that will not release.

The anatomy, simply

Muscle contraction is an electrical event driven by minerals moving across cell membranes. Calcium triggers the contraction. Magnesium and potassium are central to the reset. Sodium carries the signal.

Sodium is not the enemy either

Sodium got demonised, and for people with blood pressure issues the caution is fair. But if you sweat a lot, work outside, or exercise hard, cutting salt too far leaves you cramping and light headed.

Water without any minerals is not always the answer to a cramp. Sometimes it is the cause.

Calcium, quietly important

Beyond bones, calcium is what actually initiates a contraction. Dairy, tinned fish with bones, fortified plant milks, tofu set with calcium, and greens all count.

And calcium needs vitamin D to be absorbed properly, which is why those two keep appearing together.

Food first, then test, then supplement

Most of this is a food problem, not a pill problem. Eat plants, beans, and nuts most days and the four sort themselves out.

Can minerals fix my tight muscles?
