What actually helps a body age well?
By Ellen Argo · Updated September 15, 2026
Short answer
Protein, strength, sleep, daily movement, water and minerals, sunlight and vitamin D, plant variety, not smoking, modest alcohol, and people who love you. That is the list. It has not changed in decades and it will outlast every trend you will be sold this year.
Who this helps: Anyone who wants to stay strong and mobile, people overwhelmed by conflicting advice
The anatomy, simply
Ageing well is mostly about keeping three things: muscle mass, tissue mobility, and a nervous system that can settle. Almost everything on this list serves one of those three.
Why it happens
After all the research and all the years, the short list is embarrassingly simple. The hard part was never knowing it.
What to try today
Pick the one item on the list you are furthest from and work on only that for a month.
The ten
**Protein, enough of it, spread out.** Muscle is the currency of independence.
**Strength work, twice a week.** Nothing else preserves muscle and bone the same way. It does not need a gym.
**Sleep, seven to nine hours, protected.** This is when repair happens. Cutting it is borrowing against the body.
**Movement all day, not just once.** Fascia hydrates with motion. A daily walk plus getting up hourly beats an hour at the gym and eight hours in a chair.
**Water and minerals.** Hydrated tissue glides. Minerals let muscles release.
**Sunlight and vitamin D.** For bone, mood, and immune function. Supplement in winter if you live far north.
**Plant variety.** Thirty a week. Fibre, colour, and a well fed gut.
**Do not smoke.** It damages collagen directly, which means skin, tendon, and fascia.
**Keep alcohol modest.** It disrupts sleep and repair more than almost anything else on this list.
**Connection.** Loneliness shows up in mortality data at a size that startles people. Your nervous system reads belonging as safety.
Why none of it is exciting
Nobody can sell you a subscription to walking. There is no proprietary blend of sleep.
That is exactly why the exciting stuff keeps arriving. The fundamentals have no marketing budget.
If a new thing contradicts this list, be suspicious. If it sits on top of the list, it might be worth a look once the list is handled.
Where tissue work fits
Strength holds your range. But you cannot strengthen through tissue that has no space in it, and you cannot move well through fascia that will not glide.
So the order stays the same. Find the bully. Run the Relief Code. Then move, load, and feed the body that is now free to work.
That is the whole method, and this list is what keeps it from unravelling between sessions.
If the list feels like too much
Then do not do the list. Do one item.
Pick the one you are furthest from. Protein at breakfast, or a bedtime, or a ten minute walk after dinner. Give it a month until it is just what you do.
Then pick the next one. Five years of that and you will be a different animal, and you will have suffered through nothing.
No shame in starting late. The body is extraordinarily willing to respond, at any age, to being treated well.
Quick checklist
- Protein at every meal
- Strength work twice a week
- A protected bedtime
- Movement every hour, and a daily walk
- Water and mineral rich food
- Vitamin D in the darker months
- Thirty plant foods a week
- Modest alcohol, no smoking
- Time with people who matter to you
Pro tip from the mat
Do not try to start nine habits. Pick the one you are furthest from and give it a month. Sequence beats intensity every single time.
Common questions
Is it too late for me to start?
No. Strength training studies in people in their eighties and nineties show real gains in muscle and function. Your body does not read your birth certificate before deciding whether to respond.
What about all the longevity supplements?
Some are interesting and most are unproven in humans at the doses sold. None of them outperform sleep, protein, and strength work. Sort the list first, then experiment if you like.
Which one matters most?
Whichever one you are furthest from. For most people that is either strength work or sleep.
Reading about it helps. Feeling it change helps more.
