Grief & Breath: A Healing Reflection Worksheet
A gentle reflection weaving breathwork for rib expansion to allow grief to move, soften, and be held.
Grief is the echo of love that had no place to go. It may come with loss of a person, identity, season, or dream. It is not linear, and it asks not to be solved—but witnessed. Energetically, grief is often held in the lungs and ribs—the very place where we expand to breathe, but often constrict when pain is too deep.
Step 1: A Moment of Presence
Sit quietly. Place your hands over your ribs or wrap your arms gently around your torso. Ask yourself: What loss am I grieving, named or unnamed? Where do I feel this grief in my body? What part of me is still holding my breath in sorrow?
Write softly:
Step 2: Grief Breath Practice – Rib Expansion
Purpose: To create space in the ribs and lungs where grief may be held. Place both hands gently on the sides of your ribcage. Inhale slowly through the nose, expanding the ribs outward like wings. Hold for a brief pause. Exhale slowly through the mouth, letting the ribs soften inward. Repeat for 5–7 rounds, imagining breath as space for the grief to be held—not pushed away. Optional mantra with breath: Inhale: “I allow this sorrow to have space.” Exhale: “I do not have to carry it alone.” Pause afterward. Simply feel.
Step 3: If My Grief Could Speak
