Why does my elbow hurt when I do not play tennis?
By Ellen Argo · Updated September 2, 2026
Short answer
Elbow soreness is usually about accumulated load on the forearm tendons, not about sport. Mouse work, gripping tools, carrying bags, and phone holding all keep those tendons under low, constant tension. Working the forearm and chest, and reducing sustained gripping, tends to help more than treating the tender point at the elbow.
Who this helps: Outer or inner elbow soreness, gripping pain, sore elbow after a long work week
The anatomy, simply
The forearm extensors converge onto the outer elbow and the flexors onto the inner elbow. The tender bump is where they anchor, so tension in the muscle bellies shows up at the anchor.
Why it happens
The tender point is the attachment. The load is coming from the muscle above it and from how you hold your day.
What to try today
Chest and shoulder, then the forearm muscle belly, then very gentle work near the elbow itself.
Why sport is not the requirement
Tendon irritation at the elbow comes from cumulative load, and a mouse, a steering wheel, or a toddler carried on one arm supplies plenty.
The name suggests tennis; the reality is usually a desk or a trade.
Work the belly, not the bump
Pressing hard on the tender attachment often makes it angrier.
Work the muscle belly further down the forearm instead, with the hand actively opening, closing, and rotating. The attachment settles as the pull on it reduces.
Include the chest and shoulder
A short chest and forward shoulder change how the whole arm loads.
Starting a session at the chest and finishing near the elbow is the sequence that tends to produce lasting change rather than a day of relief.
Reduce the daily grip load
Lighten your grip on the mouse and the steering wheel. Use a bag with a shoulder strap rather than a hand carry. Rest the phone on something rather than holding it up.
These small changes remove hours of low-level tension per week.
Quick checklist
- Work the chest and shoulder before the arm
- Focus on the forearm muscle belly, not the tender bump
- Move the hand actively while compressing
- Lighten your grip on mouse, wheel, and phone
- Give it two to three weeks of daily short work
Pro tip from the table
Notice how hard you hold the mouse. Most people grip it as though it might escape. Loosening that one habit changes elbows more than any single technique.
Common questions
Should I rest completely?
Usually not. Reduce aggravating load and keep gentle movement. Complete rest tends to leave the tendon less tolerant when you return.
How long do elbow tendons take?
Tendons are slower than muscle. Several weeks to a few months is common, which is why steady daily work matters.
When should I see someone?
If there is significant weakness, numbness, locking, swelling, or no progress after several weeks of consistent care.
Reading about it helps. Feeling it change helps more.
